Are Your Wraps Healthy? Shocking Additives in Aussie Lunch Favourite Exposed! (2026)

The humble wrap, a staple in many Australian kitchens, is under scrutiny from a nutritionist who's calling out misleading marketing practices. Mandy Sacher, the founder of the Real Food Rating, is taking aim at the Spinach & Herb wraps from Mission Foods, highlighting the presence of artificial colours and preservatives that could be detrimental to children's health.

Sacher's concern stems from the fact that these wraps are marketed as a healthy option, with bright green packaging suggesting a high content of spinach. However, upon closer inspection, it's revealed that the colour is primarily achieved through artificial colours, tartrazine, and brilliant blue, with only a mere 0.9% of spinach present. This discrepancy between marketing and reality is a common issue, according to Sacher, who believes that wraps should ideally have a simple ingredient list with only three to four recognisable items.

The Spinach & Herb wraps also contain emulsifier 471, which has been linked to gut microbiome disruption, elevated cardiovascular risk, and potential cancer risks. This emulsifier is found in similar products from Coles, Simson's Pantry, Aldi, and Bfree, despite these brands also carrying high Health Star ratings and promoting fibre, whole grains, protein, or low carbs on their packaging.

Sacher's criticism of these products has led to legal threats from the Bega Group, which she claims is trying to intimidate her. Despite this, the company has taken some positive steps, such as removing antioxidant 320 (BHA) from its peanut butter and launching a lower-sodium version of Vegemite for Kids. However, the issue of artificial colours and preservatives in food products remains a significant concern.

The nutritionist advises consumers to be vigilant when choosing wraps, looking for products with a simple ingredient list and avoiding those with a long list of hard-to-pronounce chemical names. She believes that customer feedback is crucial in forcing food manufacturers to reformulate their products and create healthier options for consumers.

This controversy highlights the need for stricter regulations and transparency in the food industry, especially when it comes to marketing and ingredient lists. As consumers, we must be informed and discerning, demanding products that are both healthy and honest.
