Biniam Girmay's Dream Debut: A Triumph in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana
Biniam Girmay made a stunning debut for his new team, NSN, in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. In a thrilling reduced bunch sprint, Girmay narrowly claimed the opening stage win, showcasing his prowess on the bike. The stage was marked by a powerful late attack by Giulio Pellizzari, supported by Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, and the presence of Remco Evenepoel, who put on an impressive show of strength.
The race unfolded with an early attack by Mats Wenzel and Diego Pablo Sevilla, joined by Danny van der Tuuk and Lewis Adam. However, the break was quickly reeled in as the race settled into a holding pattern for over 100 kilometers. The key moment came with the Cat 3 Puerto de los Madroños climb, where Red Bull took control, launching Pellizzari's attack with 18 kilometers to go.
Despite Van der Tuuk's initial bonus, the strong elements of the bunch closed in fast. The last two survivors, Wenzel and Sevilla, were eventually caught, setting the stage for Red Bull's strategic move. Pellizzari's late break put rivals in a difficult position, and the chasers opted to wait, allowing Pellizzari to build a 30-second lead.
The pursuit was intense, with Bahrain Victorious, Ineos Grenadiers, and NSN lending a hand. After an epic chase, Pellizzari was caught, and the sprint began. Ben Turner from Ineos opened the sprint, but Girmay, shadowing closely, proved his mettle. His former teammate, Marit, praised Girmay's speed, stating, 'Bini isn't the fastest accelerator, but once he hits top speed, he's impossible to pass.'
Girmay's win continued NSN's impressive season, which began with a stage win at the Tour Down Under. However, the overall battle is far from over, with stage two's 17-kilometer time trial set to be a key GC day. Remco Evenepoel's presence and Red Bull's morale boost make him a strong contender for the top spot, raising the question of how much of an advantage he will take over his rivals in what could be his third individual victory in a week.
