CBS Viewers Criticize Tony Dokoupil’s Troubled Evening News Debut
In a world where first impressions are everything, Tony Dokoupil’s inaugural broadcast as the anchor of CBS Evening News certainly didn’t go as planned. This debut was marred by a series of technical glitches and on-air blunders, leaving many viewers branding it a "train wreck."
To give you a clearer picture, the chaos began when Dokoupil attempted to introduce a segment about Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s announcement regarding his decision not to run for re-election. However, instead of showing an image of Walz, a photo of Arizona Senator Mark Kelly popped up on the screen, creating confusion for both Dokoupil and the audience.
"To other news, as you just heard from Jill—oh, to other news now. Ah, to Governor Walz—no. We’re going to do Mark Kelly," Dokoupil stated, as reported by The Daily Beast. In a moment of vulnerability, he added, "First day—first day, big problems here."
As if that wasn’t enough, once they finally transitioned to the segment about Governor Walz, Dokoupil stumbled again by mistakenly referring to Minnesota with the wrong state nickname. He said, "Now we go to Minnesota. A surprise announcement from the Great Lake State there today…" Unfortunately, the nickname for Michigan is the "Great Lake(s) State," while Minnesota is actually known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes."
This mishap didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, who quickly took to social media to voice their discontent with Dokoupil’s performance. One user lamented, "This is embarrassing. Newly installed CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil has major problems during his first regular broadcast. The inexperience of new CBS News chief Bari Weiss is on full display."
Another remarked, "Poor Tony’s not getting off to a good start," while another user bluntly asserted, "Tony Dokoupil is becoming a joke really fast!"
Criticism also extended to CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, with one commenter stating, "CBS News is crumbling at a record rate under Bari Weiss." Someone else added, "This is what happens when you create a new team without anyone who knows how to run a network news show." Another user succinctly summed it up with, "An absolute train wreck."

Dokoupil’s transition from CBS Mornings to CBS Evening News comes amidst significant changes within CBS News, including the appointment of Bari Weiss, co-founder of The Free Press, as editor-in-chief last October.
On January 1st, CBS News shared a video statement from Dokoupil, where he called upon viewers to hold him accountable as he embarks on this new journey. He assured the audience that his focus would be on the average American, rather than catering to advertisers, politicians, or corporate interests, including those at CBS.
