When President Trump takes the stage for his State of the Union address, a powerful visual statement will unfold in the chamber. A significant number of Democratic congresswomen are set to don the color white, a choice that carries a rich historical and political weight. The Democratic Women's Caucus sees wearing white as a dual tribute – honoring the historical struggle for suffrage and boldly signaling their continued engagement in that fight.
While Rep. Leger Fernández herself will not be attending the State of the Union address, her message and the caucus's intent will be powerfully conveyed. Even members with alternative plans, such as attending a rally organized by MoveOn on the National Mall, are committed to wearing white.
And this is the part most people miss... The immediate catalyst for this year's white attire is a piece of legislation known as the SAVE America Act. Democrats have raised serious alarms that this bill, spearheaded by a Republican-led House, could disenfranchise tens of millions of eligible voters, particularly women who may have changed their last names after marriage. The act, passed by the House, mandates that voters present proof of U.S. citizenship in person to register for federal elections and requires photo ID with proof of citizenship to cast a ballot. While its passage in the Senate is uncertain, President Trump has vowed to pursue such measures unilaterally.
"Their attack on our ability to participate in our democracy elevated the color white this year because it represents women's right to vote and their power when they do vote," Leger Fernández emphasized. She drew a poignant parallel between the suffragists of the past and the current political landscape: "The suffragists marched, protested and starved themselves so that they could get the right to vote in 1920. Here we are in 2026 and Republicans are trying to limit women's ability to vote. So we're going to be wearing white to honor the suffragists who had a vision that the women's vote could change America, and it has for the better."
It's a powerful reminder that women's participation in the electorate is not just a right, but a force for change. Census Bureau data consistently shows higher voter turnout among women than men in presidential elections since 1984. In the 2024 election, for instance, nearly 67% of women cast their ballots, compared to about 64% of men.
