Gas Outage Crisis: 4,600 Homes in South Devon Left Without Gas (2026)

In a race against time, engineers have been tirelessly working to restore gas service to approximately 4,600 properties in the picturesque regions of Kingsbridge, Malborough, and Salcombe in South Devon. The situation arose over the weekend, coinciding with plummeting temperatures that only added to the urgency of the repairs.

Late into Saturday night, Wales & West Utilities reported that technicians had successfully repaired a damaged mains pipe, which was the source of the outage. However, this accomplishment is just the beginning of a more complex process. Each property affected by the gas interruption requires two separate visits from the engineering teams—once to safely turn off the gas supply and a second time to restore it.

For some residents, good news may arrive as early as Sunday when they might see their gas supply restored, while others may need to wait until Monday or even Tuesday. "We’re encouraging everyone to make arrangements to be at home on Sunday," stated Wales & West Utilities, as around 100 engineers are dispatched throughout the area to expedite these crucial visits.

Gwyn Thomas from Wales & West Utilities shared on BBC Radio Devon, "I’m delighted to report that our crews worked diligently through the night and completed the repairs to the main line, marking a significant step towards restoring gas supply." He continued to emphasize the scale of the task at hand, noting, "With 4,600 properties affected, it’s a daunting challenge. Our primary objective today is to ensure all supplies are isolated before we can begin the reconnection process. While we hope to reestablish service for many customers today, it’s likely that some will have to wait until Monday or Tuesday for their gas to return."

The outage was reportedly triggered by work conducted by a third party near Belle Hill, close to Kingsbridge. Adding to the complications, a yellow ice and snow warning remains in effect for the South West until 11:00 GMT on Tuesday, further stressing the importance of a swift resolution.

Additionally, local authorities have indicated that the gas disruption could impact the reopening of five schools after the Christmas break, specifically Kingsbridge Primary School, Kingsbridge Community College, West Alvington Primary School, Malborough Primary School, and Salcombe Primary School. Parents and guardians are encouraged to check the Devon County Council's schools website for the latest updates on any closures.

In the midst of this crisis, local businesses are feeling the pinch. Wayne Grills, who operates the popular Pizza Planet in Kingsbridge, was forced to close his restaurant due to its dependency on gas for cooking. He lamented, "Once we realized we were without gas, there was no choice but to shut down. Typically, the last weekend before students head back to school is quite busy, and Saturday was shaping up to be no exception, but then the plug was pulled. Given the number of properties that will require visits from engineers, it’s clear this is a massive undertaking.”

As the community awaits the restoration of their gas supply, one can't help but wonder—how do such outages impact local businesses and everyday life in these tight-knit communities? And what measures might be put in place to prevent similar situations in the future? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments!
