Nio Onvo L90 Special Edition: Chinese Year of the Horse Celebration | SUV Review (2026)

In a bold move that coincides with the upcoming Year of the Horse in Chinese culture, Onvo, the sub-brand of Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO, HKG: 9866), has unveiled new special edition variants of its L90 large SUV. This launch follows a similar initiative for the L60 model, showcasing Onvo's commitment to celebrating significant cultural events. The two newly introduced L90 variants are dubbed "Ma Dao Cheng Gong" (马到成功), which translates to wishing for success and smooth transitions—a fitting theme as the brand continues to expand its offerings.

These special editions include the Max and Ultra options, starting at RMB 296,800 (approximately $42,620) and RMB 316,800 respectively. Notably, the Max variant is priced at RMB 31,680 more than the standard Pro model, reflecting an 11.66% increase over the regular price of RMB 26,580. Additionally, it costs RMB 27,980 more than the standard Max version, which retails at RMB 27,980, amounting to a 6.08% hike.

Exclusively available in a six-seat configuration, these special editions do not offer the seven-seat option, catering specifically to those looking for a more spacious yet intimate travel experience. For customers interested in the BaaS (Battery as a Service) program, the starting prices for the Max and Ultra options drop to RMB 210,800 and RMB 230,800 respectively, along with a monthly battery rental fee of RMB 899.

Both variants come with unique horse-themed interior and exterior styling packages, enhancing their appeal and distinctiveness. Display models are currently showcased at Onvo showrooms, allowing potential buyers to appreciate the exclusive designs in person.

This launch is part of Onvo’s broader strategy to roll out multiple special editions recently, illustrating its aim to enhance brand visibility while keeping costs manageable. Just days earlier, on January 16, Onvo revealed a horse-themed special edition of the L60, aligning with the Lunar New Year festivities. The special edition L60 starts at RMB 218,900, which includes the battery pack, representing a RMB 12,000 increase (5.80%) from the regular model priced at RMB 206,900.

The five-seat L60 SUV was Onvo's inaugural model, officially launched on September 19, 2024. To celebrate its first anniversary, an updated version of the L60 was released on the same date in 2025. Furthermore, the L90 large SUV made its debut on July 31, 2025. Last year, Onvo also introduced limited editions like the Violet Edition and Black Knight Edition, diversifying their product lineup.

Despite some challenges, Onvo delivered 9,154 vehicles in December 2025, which reflects a 13.05% decrease compared to the previous year and a notable 22.38% decline from November. In total, Onvo managed to deliver 107,808 vehicles throughout 2025. Originally, Onvo had planned to launch the L80 five-seat SUV in the fourth quarter of the same year; however, this has been postponed due to manufacturing capacity constraints.

(Exchange rate: $1 = RMB 6.9637)

But here’s where it gets controversial: how will these premium special editions impact Onvo's sales trajectory? Will consumers be willing to pay a higher price for themed variants when standard models are already available? Share your thoughts below!
