This is not just a matter of media ownership or editorial constraints, but also a result of the system's inherent complexity and invisibility. AMOC operates on a massive scale, moving heat and salinity across the Atlantic, yet it generates few visuals that can be easily understood or communicated to the public. The challenge lies in the visual filter through which climate journalism operates, prioritizing urgent, dramatic, and human-centered images that reduce vast, slow environmental processes into events that can be seen and felt. This filter risks mistaking attention for understanding, as it fails to convey the complexity and uncertainty of these systems. The solution is not to find more dramatic images, but to recognize the limitations of the visual conventions through which we tell environmental stories. Climate journalism must embrace the complexity and uncertainty of these systems, and find new ways to communicate their importance and impact to the public. Only then can we truly understand and address the challenges posed by AMOC and other critical climate systems.
