A 307-million-year-old skull, unearthed in Canada, has sparked excitement in the scientific community. This fossil, belonging to a Tyrannoroter heberti, may be one of the earliest known vegetarian animals. The discovery challenges long-held beliefs that all animals were meat-eaters when they first moved from water to land. The study, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, reveals that animals began eating plants millions of years earlier than previously thought. This is significant because it suggests that the essential components of today's terrestrial ecosystems, dominated by herbivores, have been around since the Carboniferous Period. The Tyrannoroter is the earliest and most complete vertebrate land herbivore with adaptations to process high-fiber plant material. Its robust skull features traits indicating herbivory, such as a downturned snout, large chambers for powerful muscles, and a mouth full of opposing dental fields. The name Tyrannoroter means 'tyrant digger', reflecting its relatively larger size for its time. The species name heberti honors research collaborator Brian Hebert, who found the skull. The researchers believe the creature may have been eating insects before turning to plants. 3D scanning and printing were used to study the fossil in detail, allowing for visualization and 3D prints without risking the actual fossil. This discovery challenges our understanding of vertebrate animal radiation and the evolution of herbivory.
